Walter Neu studied physics at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz/Germany and got appointed for his PhD work to CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research, Geneva, CH at the On-Line Isotope Mass Separator ISOLDE Collaboration. Moving into the field of applied physics he worked as Group Leader of “UV optical fiber technology” at the Laser-Laboratory Göttingen e.V. and started the formation of the Department “Lasers in Medicine and Analytics” at the LLG. Since 1994 Walter Neu is a full professor in Laser Technology at the Hochschule Emden/Leer – University of Applied Sciences and Director of the Institute for Laser and Optics. He currently holds a Research Professorship of Lower Saxony on „Spatial and time resolved elemental and molecular analytics – Optical MicroSpectroscopy“and is one of the cofounders and principal investigators of the cooperative and interdisciplinary Research Training group "Nano energy research" at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. Walter Neu has 30 years of experience in high resolution optical spectroscopy, laser applications in fundamental research and medicine, microscopy and imaging. Extensive international collaborations, student’s exchange programs together with ongoing research activities resulted in more than 130 publications, over 1100 citations, and 7 patents.

Walter Neu’s research interests are the imaging and hyperspectral study of dynamic phenomena in micro-and nanoscale on living biosystems. The development of fast, massively parallel multi-functional 4D microscopy methods new approaches to the study of dynamic processes on surfaces and interfaces are at hand. The combination of laser-induced break-down spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy enables for complementary investigations of atomic and molecular properties of organic and inorganic samples. Dynamics of laser induced cavitations and shocks are under investigation as well as lasers in medicine.
